About Us
North Sidney Church and Cemetery Historical Association is registered with the State of Michigan as a non-profit organization. Our purpose is to take care of the church and cemetery and to preserve it for future generations. Membership can be either by paying dues yearly of $2.00 per year after the first fee of $10.00 is paid or life membership of $50 per person and is a one-time fee which is much easier. Dues are used for newsletter, postage and other general up-keep expenses. Memorial money is used for special projects. Other gifts or donations help with larger projects. Cemetery up-keep is paid from the Perpetual Care Fund. Download a printable membership application.

Focus on the Families
This year the “Focus on Families” is the Clock family. Elbert Clock was born August 24, 1921, the son of Ferry and Alma Clock. Elbert Clock was from the Greenville area. On September 26, 1942 Elbert Clock and Vernice Lamb, daughter of Niels and Anna Lamb were married. They lived in Lansing for a short time. While Elbert was in the army during the Second World War, Vernice came back to the Sidney area with a young son, Ronald Neils, born August 8, 1943. Jane Anna was born January 21, 1948 and Mary Ane was born on September 27, 1955. The clock family moved into the Andrew Thompson home just north of farm. Vernice’s grandmother had died in 1944 and the house was vacant and handy to the farm of her parents. After the death of Niels on August 30, 1959, the Clocks moved into the big farmhouse and Anna moved into the small house where her parents had lived. Vernice and Elbert took over the farming and Vernice found that she was able to handle a dairy herd. On a very cold, stormy day the sad news came that Vernice had been killed in an automobile accident on January 16, 1966.

Memorial Day Service & Volunteers
Please plan on attending the Memorial Day Service on Monday, May
31 at 2:00pm. Final plans will be made at the Annual Meeting on May 12. The meeting
is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the Church.
Luke Dudenhofer has again agreed to deliver this year's message. Luke and his wife Melissa grew up
in the Stanton/Sidney area and now live in Chicago. Luke is pastor of the New Life Community Church
in the Bridgeport neighborhood and they have two adopted sons, Josiah Wesley, 5 years old and Titus Charles who will be 4 on June 1 and Ethni Aniyah Rose will be 2 in September.
While you are visiting the Church, make sure you check out all the photos in the back of the room. There are many old pictures from families in the area. See how many you recognize.
The week prior to Memorial Day we are looking for volunteers to spend a few hours to keep the church open and greet visitors. We are looking at possible 3 hour shifts from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on May 22, 23, 27, 28 and 29. If you are able to come and take newsletters to visitors and serve cookies and coffee during any of these times please let the officers know so we can open the church. If we don’t get volunteers the church may not be open before the Memorial Day service.

North Sidney Book
We still have copies of the North Sidney 1884-1984 book. There
is much information on the Sidney area and families in the area (much of the information I write in this news letter comes from this book). Contact
Jennifer Thomsen or pick up one at the Church during the Memorial Day service. You can also print out the order
form and mail it in with your check.

History of Sidney
Sidney is an unincorporated community near the center of the township. In 1854, Phineas Swift, a New Yorker, became the first permanent settler. A post office was established on September 19, 1862, with Joshua V. Noah as the first postmaster. The community was named for the township, which in turn was named for Sidney, Ohio, the the home of some of its early settlers. According to the US Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 35.1 square miles of which, 34.1 square miles of it is land and 1.0 square miles of it is water.

Special Thanks
Thank you to Clare, Kent and Wes Thomsen for the fall maintenance, shutting off the water and trimming, and getting the water running in the spring. Without their assistance there wouldn’t be water for the plants in the summer. They have also had to put some repairs into the well pump.
